Lil Peep basically invented a lane. He took emo and pop-punk, the distorted guitars, the melancholy, the vulnerability, and fused it with trap production and rap delivery. The vocal sound that came out of that is hazy, sad, lo-fi, and intimate, and it launched a whole generation of artists chasing it. The hard part is that the sound depends on things most producers are trained to remove.
People try to copy Lil Peep and make it too clean, too tight, too polished. His sound is the opposite. It's dreamy and a little broken on purpose. Here is what actually drives it.
What Defines the Lil Peep Vocal Sound
The core of it is haze. Peep's vocals sit in a washed, reverb-heavy space that makes everything feel distant and moody, like the vocal is floating in the track rather than sitting on top of it. That atmosphere is central. A dry, upfront vocal sounds wrong for this style.
The second trait is lo-fi warmth and grit. His recordings had a deliberately imperfect, slightly distorted texture, warm, a little fuzzy, never pristine. And the third is the vulnerability in the delivery itself. Peep's vocals feel fragile and emotional, and the chain preserves that softness rather than tightening it into something controlled. Melodic, melancholic, and hazy, all at once.
The Vocal Chain Behind the Sound
The Lil Peep chain is about atmosphere and texture, not clarity. Start with EQ that keeps the warm, slightly lo-fi character. Don't high-pass aggressively or chase a bright, airy top end, that thins out the warmth the sound depends on. A mid-forward, slightly dark tone fits better than a crisp, modern one.
Reverb is the heart of it. Use more than you would on almost any other style, a lush, washed space that makes the vocal dreamy and distant. Pair it with a delay for depth. Then add saturation or light distortion for that lo-fi, fuzzy warmth, this is what gives the vocal its texture and keeps it from sounding too clean. Tuning stays loose and expressive so the melodic, emotional delivery keeps its natural waver. Compression stays gentle, just enough to hold the vocal in the mix without flattening the softness.
Haze, warmth, and texture over clarity and control. That's the whole formula. For the wider genre context, our guide on how to get the emo rap vocal sound covers where Peep sits next to XXXTENTACION and Juice WRLD.
Recording for the Lil Peep Sound
The vulnerability has to be real in the take. Peep's vocals work because the emotion is genuine, soft, a little melancholic, unguarded, so lean into the feeling rather than a technically perfect performance. Don't over-sing or try to sound powerful. The fragility is the point.
A slightly lo-fi recording setup actually suits this sound rather than hurting it, so you don't need pristine gear. Keep the delivery melodic and relaxed, let the reverb and texture do the atmospheric work in the mix, and don't clean the take up so much that it loses its warmth.

Getting that washed, warm, lo-fi atmosphere without tipping into a muddy, undefined mess takes careful balancing of reverb, saturation, and EQ, because the sound lives right on the edge of too much. Our Lil Peep vocal preset loads a chain built for that hazy, melancholic, textured sound, so you can keep the dreamy warmth without losing the vocal entirely. It works across FL Studio, Logic Pro, BandLab, and more, with setup instructions included.
Final Thoughts
The Lil Peep sound is proof that imperfection can be the entire aesthetic. The haze, the warmth, the slight distortion, the fragile delivery, none of it is clean, and that's exactly why it works. Clean would ruin it.
Most producers spend years learning to remove everything Peep's sound is built on. Getting it back is the hard part.
